When I joined the eight-week Youth Empowerment Program (Y.E.P.), I expected it to be just like school—a few lectures on business and some new skills.

I was excited to meet new people, but I was also incredibly nervous. As a fifteen-year-old, I didn’t think adults would actually listen to my ideas. However, that mindset changed quickly.

By week two, we were asked to stand up and share our dreams in front of everyone. My heart was racing; I have always been shy, and the idea of receiving honest feedback felt terrifying.

The program pushed me to face real-world challenges. I struggled to balance school homework with my Y.E.P. tasks, which made me realize I needed to get better at planning my day.

Our group project was another test. We argued over different ideas, and some members didn’t do their fair share. It was frustrating, but it taught me that true teamwork is much harder than it looks. Looking back, those challenges were exactly where I grew the most.

The mentors never let me stay quiet. Through constant speaking drills and small presentations, I went from being the person who hid in the back to being the first one to raise my hand.

My mindset toward making money changed, too. Instead of depending on the ordinary ways, I learned online can be an avenue also.

Most importantly, knowing my teammates depended on me made me realize what it truly means to be responsible.

By the final week, I saw real results. I had  built a circle of friends who push me to do better and support me when I fail.

Y.E.P. didn't just teach me skills for "when I’m older"—it showed me that I can lead, plan, and speak up today. I arrived unsure of myself, but I am leaving with a solid plan and the confidence of someone who knows people believe in her. These eight weeks came to an end,  but this feels like my real beginning.

At the beginning, I struggled to see how this program would fit into my life. I found it challenging to focus because some of my friends were discouraging me, telling me that I was simply wasting my time. Because of that, I didn’t give the first few classes my full concentration.

By the third class, I decided to stop listening to the noise and follow my own path. That was when everything changed. I began learning the 7 Pillars of Thriving, and I realized how essential it was to shift from a "limited mindset" to a "thriving mindset."

Although I hadn't participated fully at the start, I stayed the course until graduation, where I was honoured to be one of three students chosen to advance to the next level.

Seizing the Opportunity
I refused to give up. When my principal invited me to a follow-up meeting because the other graduates couldn't make it, I knew I had to make the most of the opportunity.

It was an incredible experience; I felt so much joy connecting with people globally and finally sharing my plans for the future.

Having mastered the 7 Pillars, I am eager to continue learning. I look forward to the ongoing guidance of our leaders, Carol Witt and our principal (Kenneth Kisang), as they lead us through future meetings.

Now that I am practicing these lessons at home—away from the noise and distractions—I am ready to give my total concentration to my growth.

My Experience in the Youth Empowerment Programme (Y.E.P)
Joining the Youth Empowerment Programme has provided me with hands-on experience that goes far beyond the traditional classroom setting. Through this journey, I have gained invaluable skills and perspectives that are shaping my future. Here is a breakdown of what I have achieved:

1. Practical Skill Development
I have received specialized training in areas such as entrepreneurship, ICT, and digital marketing. Unlike theoretical learning, this program allowed me to actually build myself, solve community problems  and real-world tasks. I am no longer just learning about industry; I am actively participating in it.

2. Leadership and Teamwork
By leading group activities and solving community challenges, I have learned how to manage people and navigate diverse team dynamics. These experiences have taught me the art of conflict resolution and the importance of collaborative problem-solving.

3. Mentorship and Networking
I have benefited from the direct guidance of professional global mentors. These mentors share real-world advice that you can't find in textbooks, and they have been instrumental in connecting me to new professional opportunities.

4. Direct Work Exposure
The program has been a bridge to the professional world. Through learning businesses environments and how young people take up roles. I have gained a clear understanding of the youth and the expectations of modern world.

5. Community Impact
I have planned and executed various initiatives, such as solving local businesses problem and mentorship sessions for younger children. Running these awareness campaigns has significantly boosted my self-confidence and given me a profound sense of social responsibility.

6. Professional Soft Skills
I have sharpened my "hidden" toolkit—public speaking, and now writing. I now feel prepared to show up confidence.

"This experience hasn't just taught me how to work; it has taught me how to lead and make a tangible difference in my community."
